Student dress code
At Ancora House School, we prioritise student wellbeing and comfort. Many of our young people have previously faced challenges related to self‑image, identity, and the pressures associated with school uniform. To support a relaxed, welcoming environment, there is no formal uniform, and young people may choose their own clothing within the guidelines below.
General Expectations
Young people must wear clothing that is appropriate for a school setting and does not cause offence to staff, peers, or visitors. Clothing should support a calm, inclusive, and respectful atmosphere for all members of the school community.
Items Not Permitted
The following items are not allowed:
- Strappy or strapless tops
- Crop tops or tops revealing the stomach, back, or chest
- ‘Short’ shorts, such as hotpants
- Clothing featuring offensive logos, pictures, or text
- Clothing with homophobic, racist, sexist, sexual, discriminatory, or otherwise challenging wording, imagery, or designs
- Pyjamas or nightwear
Footwear
For health and safety reasons:
- Sensible shoes must be worn at all times
- High heels and wedges are not permitted
PE Clothing
Students are not required to change for PE lessons and may wear their usual clothes. However:
- Flat, secure‑fitting shoes must be worn for all PE activities
Decision-Making and Consequences
The Headteacher has the final decision on what is considered appropriate. If a student’s clothing is deemed unsuitable:
- Parents/carers or a member of the clinical team will be informed
- The young peorson may be sent home or back to the ward to change
- Parents/carers may be asked to bring alternative clothing
- The response will take into account the student’s age and normal travel arrangements
